Ontario’s Economic Update Addresses Tariff Issues

The Ontario government has stated that even with the challenges posed by tariffs, the province continues to be competitive and welcoming for business.

Finance Minister Peter Bethlenfalvy shared the government’s 2026 Fall Economic Update on Thursday afternoon at Queens Park in Toronto.

While he didn’t mention the U. S. administration directly, Bethlenfalvy was the first to recognize that things haven’t been easy.

“We need to look no further than the price of gas, the rising costs of goods due to tariffs, and the impact of uncertainty on investment and employment,” said Bethlenfalvy. “As a result, Ontario families and businesses are feeling the impacts. No doubt, the world has changed.”

The fall update was released during a time when tariffs have significantly affected Ontario manufacturing, especially in the auto sector.

The focus was on creating a plan to protect industries in Ontario that are most vulnerable to tariffs while working towards making the economy more self-reliant and prepared for growth.

Last week, both provincial and federal governments revealed a joint $8.7-billion initiative aimed at enhancing steel and automotive production in Ontario, which includes $2.5 billion dedicated to supporting current autoworkers.

The province also introduced the Ontario Competitiveness Tax Cut as part of Ontario’s long-term Tax Action Plan, leading to $8 billion in tax relief for residents.

Tax credits are proposed for sectors like research and development as well as film and television production.

This means that Ontario’s deficit is expected to reach a record $16.9 billion for fiscal year 2026-27, with plans for a balanced budget within three years.

Bethlenfalvy expressed confidence that Ontarians will meet this challenge head-on as well.

“Madam Speaker, we can not control every challenge beyond our borders, but we can control how to respond,” said Bethlenfalvy. “And Ontario’s response is to build, and to build together.”

The leader of the Official Opposition quickly responded to Bethlenfalvy’s remarks.

NDP Leader Marit Stiles stated that his comments did not include any strategies for reducing costs for Ontarians who are struggling financially.

“This Fall Economic Statement is an admission of failure,” said Stiles. “Costs keep going up for the people of Ontario, and this incompetent government is only making it worse. We’re facing dueling crises of affordability and a trade war while Doug Ford continues to party on taxpayer dollars without delivering anything meaningful for Ontarians. At every turn, this government has sold out the people of Ontario-squandering taxpayer money on luxury hotels while growing deficits lead to service cuts.”
