Wellington OPP have confirmed that five people lost their lives in a two-vehicle crash in Mapleton Township on Friday evening.
Emergency services were alerted to the scene at the intersection of Wellington Road 12 and 4th Line, close to Conestogo Lake Conservation Area, around 7:30 p. m.
Police reported that a van with 10 passengers collided with an SUV carrying just one person at the intersection.
The tragic accident resulted in the deaths of five children aged four to 12. OPP stated that four adults, one infant, and the SUV driver suffered serious injuries and were either treated on-site, taken to local hospitals, or airlifted to various trauma centers.
Three individuals were airlifted due to their severe injuries, while several others were sent to nearby hospitals.
The OPP Traffic Incident Management Enforcement team was present at the site and is helping with the ongoing investigation.
Consequently, traffic is closed in all directions at the intersection of 4th Line and Wellington Road 12. The public is urged to find alternative routes.
