A 45-year-old woman from Peterborough has been charged with second-degree murder after her 74-year-old mother died suddenly on Tuesday (June 9).

Just before 5 p. m. that day, police received a call about a woman found in the water near the London Street footbridge on the east side of the Otonabee River.

When officers arrived, they rescued the woman from the water and tried to perform life-saving measures. She was taken to Peterborough Regional Health Centre, where she was pronounced dead.

Initially, police did not consider the death suspicious; however, all sudden deaths are examined by the Major Crime Unit. Following further investigation, they arrested and charged the victim’s daughter on Friday (June 12).

Sarah-Jayne Maier, aged 45, is facing a second-degree murder charge related to her mother, Susan Maier, who was 74 years old and lived in Peterborough.

The accused is currently in police custody and is scheduled to appear in court on Saturday.

Authorities are urging anyone who may have been on the Rotary Trail between 4 and 5:30 p. m. that Tuesday to reach out at 705-876-1122 ext. 555. To provide information anonymously, you can contact Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477) or submit a tip online at stopcrimehere. ca.
