The Essex County Ontario Provincial Police is receiving a $200,000 boost to help fight auto theft.
Auto theft rates have been decreasing since hitting their peak a few years back, and Essex MPP Anthony Leardi believes this funding will support continued progress.
“This investment will give our local OPP officers more tools and resources to combat auto theft, protect our neighbourhoods, and keep families safe across Essex County,” said Leardi.
Thursday morning’s announcement was part of the 2026-27 PAT Grant Program. Ontario is investing an additional $6 million to back 22 police projects throughout the province. Since 2023, the Ontario government has allocated $24 million into the program aimed at fighting auto theft.
Since 2023, auto thefts in Ontario have dropped by 36 percent from their highest point.
“The Preventing Auto Theft Grant will enhance the ability of the Essex County OPP to address auto theft through proactive policing, specialized training, and stronger partnerships,” said Superintendent of the Essex County OPP Mark Loucas. “Working closely with the OPP-led Provincial Auto Theft and Towing Team and policing partners, we can better prevent, detect, and investigate auto theft while improving community safety.”
Dennis Rogers, chair of the Essex County OPP South Detachment Board and mayor of Kingsville, welcomes this investment.
“By supporting initiatives that address automotive theft and enhance community safety, we are helping ensure residents continue to receive the high-quality policing services they deserve, and the safe streets they expect,” he said.
