Matthew Rae has been named to Doug Ford’s cabinet.
On Wednesday, the premier revealed a major reshuffle of his executive council that saw the Perth-Wellington MPP taking on the role of associate minister of energy-intensive industries within the Ministry of Energy and Mines.
“It is an honour to continue serving the good people of Perth-Wellington and Ontario in this new role,” Rae stated in a press release.
Rae, who is currently in his second term as an MPP, steps into this position after having worked as the parliamentary assistant to the minister of municipal affairs and housing. He also held positions as government caucus chair and chief government whip during his time at Queen’s Park.
In the announcement, Rae expressed eagerness to collaborate closely with Energy and Mines Minister Stephen Lecce “to build the next generation of made-in-Canada energy.”
“At a time of economic uncertainty and growing pressures on Canada’s energy security, Ontario has an important role to play in strengthening our energy independence and supporting good-paying jobs,” Rae mentioned in the release.
The MPP pointed out that his home riding of Perth-Wellington hosts many energy-intensive industries.
This cabinet shake-up occurs amid ongoing trade tensions between Canada and the United States, with Ford highlighting these issues as a reason for his cabinet changes.
“President Trump is once again taking aim at Ontario’s economy with his latest round of tariffs and anti-trade measures. Ontario won’t back down. We’re preparing for the long haul, and that means putting the right team in place to protect Ontario workers and jobs today while building the most competitive, resilient and self-reliant economy in the G7 that can withstand whatever challenges come our way,” said the premier in his release.
