Police have identified the 54-year-old man who lost his life in “an unprovoked attack” in Richmond Hill and arrested a 23-year-old suspect connected to the incident.

Officers arrived at an assault scene near Lorraine Street and Bernard Avenue on Wednesday, where they found a man with life-threatening injuries, according to York Regional Police (YRP) in a news release on Thursday.

Amir Shafei of Richmond Hill was declared dead at the hospital due to blunt force trauma, said police.

The release mentioned that a 23-year-old suspect from Richmond Hill “was arrested without incident” near the location.

The suspect has been charged with second-degree murder and two counts of breach of probation, according to police.

On Thursday, Const. Kevin Nebrija stated, “The victim was outside of his residence when he was attacked without provocation by the suspect.”

He added that investigators believe this attack was indeed unprovoked and that neither individual knew each other prior to this event.

“For reasons unknown, the suspect attacked the victim just for no rhyme or reason,” he said.

“This is an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to public safety right now.”

Nebrija confirmed that police are not searching for any additional suspects.

Anyone with information or video footage from the area is encouraged to contact York Regional Police or Crime Stoppers.
