Man Arrested After $1M Burglary at Mississauga Mall

A 41-year-old man from Mississauga has been taken into custody and charged after police recovered nearly $1 million worth of stolen items following a break-in at a luxury store in a mall.

According to Peel Regional Police, on Friday, a masked individual used tools to break into the Holt Renfrew department store located within Square One Shopping Centre on April 30 shortly after 1 a. m. He managed to pry open a security gate to enter the shop.

Once inside, he smashed display cases and made off with expensive jewelry and clothing from various displays.

Police reported that around $800,000 in merchandise was taken from Holt Renfrew.

Det. Joseph Cardi mentioned during a press conference held inside the mall that security footage helped officers track the suspect’s actions.

“Our investigation determined that the suspect gained access and forced entry into a retail store, stealing a large quantity of high-end merchandise,” Cardi said.

The suspect reportedly fled on foot before stealing an unattended vehicle nearby, which police found the following day.

Peel police have stated they’ve recovered nearly $1M in stolen clothes and jewelry, charging a 41-year-old man in connection with the theft. CBC’s Greg Ross has more details regarding the investigation into the break-in at Mississauga’s Square One Mall.

After conducting surveillance, investigators arrested the man, executed a search warrant at his residence, and discovered a “significant” amount of stolen items, Cardi explained.

The recovered items included jewelry-some not related to this incident-and nearly $10,000 worth of lottery tickets.

“We’re in the process now trying to figure out where they belong to and if they are part of the criminal activity,” he said.

The accused faces charges including: break and enter; possession of burglary tools; disguise with intent; motor vehicle theft; possession of a weapon for dangerous purposes; failure to comply with a release order; and two counts of breach of probation. He remains in custody awaiting a bail hearing.

Authorities indicated that this individual is still held in custody and has faced similar charges before.

Retail theft is serious business, expert warns

Rui Rodrigues, an executive advisor on loss prevention and risk management for Retail Council of Canada, spoke at the news conference stating that retail theft isn’t just minor crime-it supports organized crime activities.

“Across Canada, we are seeing increasing violence and threats against employees, highly mobile organized groups targeting multiple jurisdictions taking advantage of our lack of organization while funneling stolen goods into illicit markets,” Rodrigues said.

“This isn’t merely an issue for retailers; it affects public safety as well as community welfare-it’s increasingly tied up with organized crime.”

Rodrigues noted that incidents like what happened at Holt Renfrew have become more frequent over recent years.

“The level of violence we’re seeing has risen significantly along with how fast these thefts occur-the scale has really increased too,” he remarked.

The impact of retail theft on community safety: police

Peel Police Deputy Chief Marc Andrews emphasized how retail theft affects businesses as well as local communities.

“Incidents like this not only result in financial losses but undermine safety perceptions for residents working or living nearby,” Andrews commented via news release on Friday.

“Through proactive intelligence-led policing strategies we’re making efforts aimed at disrupting organized retail crime while ensuring accountability among offenders.”

Stephen Gascoine who serves as director/general manager for Square One Shopping Centre also shared insights stating their arrest sends “a clear message indicating there’s no tolerance for organized retail crime” within their community.
