Port Stanley, Ont., is preparing to welcome beachgoers by the end of June.

The Mayor of Central Elgin, Sally Martyn, mentioned that they and other towns in Elgin County will be opening their beaches on June 22.

“We are working very closely with Southwestern Public Health to make sure we can open them safely and looking at all of the rules we will possibly put in place.”

This announcement follows Ontario Premier Doug Ford’s statement earlier this week that all beaches and restaurants with outdoor patios could reopen starting this Friday, as part of Phase 2 of the province’s reopening plan.

To ensure safety, Martyn said there will be patrols on the beach to help everyone keep a safe distance from each other. She also urged anyone feeling unwell to stay home.

Signs will be posted along the route to the beach, letting visitors know if it’s open and whether there’s enough space. A Facebook page named Central Elgin Beach Rescue will provide similar updates.

Since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Martyn stated they have had just three cases of COVID-19, with no new cases reported since late April.

“This will bring in tourists, but the biggest problem is a lot of the residents are worried about what else it will bring in.”

Despite some concerns, she noted that many local businesses are looking forward to seeing more tourists.

Carol Gates, owner of GT’s on the Beach restaurant, said they have already lost 30 percent of their season.

“It has been really rough,” Gates said. “We were closed up until a couple of weeks ago, and we opened for takeout only, but sales can’t possibly make up for a busy patio.”/i/>

The restaurant sits right on the beach and has received permission from the municipality to expand their patio space for physical distancing.
