The YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce is enhancing access to three key programs at a new office located at 604 Goderich St. in downtown Port Elgin, set to open before the year wraps up. This means better access to YMCA Employment Services, Settlement Services, and Community Initiatives programs.

A news release from the YMCA on Nov. 17 mentioned that although these services are currently available by appointment throughout Grey and Bruce Counties, having a fixed location in Bruce County will greatly simplify things for community members seeking assistance.
Renovations are currently taking place at the office, positioned on the north-west corner of Goderich and Gustavus St., to create a resource center that will be open to everyone in the community, featuring computers, phone access, and comfortable meeting spaces.

Between six and eight staff members from the YMCA’s Employment and Settlement programs will be present daily to support individuals and families. Other YMCA programs will also utilize this space as needed to connect with clients and the public. Together, these services foster a welcoming environment for connection, growth, and community involvement.

“Our YMCA is proud to serve communities across Grey and Bruce Counties,” said Sarah Cowley, CEO of the YMCA of Owen Sound Grey Bruce in the release.
“From our Health, Fitness & Aquatics facility in Owen Sound to our Child Care and School Age programs in Owen Sound, Port Elgin, Ripley, Kincardine, and Hanover, we are deeply connected to the people and places we serve,” she said.
“With Community Initiatives, Employment Services, and Settlement Services currently based in Owen Sound and Hanover, it’s exciting to now have another home base in Bruce County. This new Port Elgin location helps us continue growing our impact and reaching even more people to help ignite their potential,” Cowley said.

“Our mission is to strengthen communities and empower individuals,” said Matt Shute, Director of Community Initiatives, Employment Services, and Settlement Services. “Having a dedicated location in downtown Port Elgin allows us to be more accessible to residents of Bruce County. It means people will have a welcoming place nearby to access employment supports, settlement services, and community programs that can truly change lives. We’re excited to deepen our presence and build stronger connections in this community.”

The services available at the Port Elgin office will include:

Employment Ontario programs are partially funded by both the Government of Canada and the Government of Ontario. They help individuals prepare for work through job search support along with résumé writing tips and interview coaching while connecting them with local employers. These initiatives are delivered alongside Bruce County as part of their role as Employment Service System Manager (ESSM) for the Stratford-Bruce Peninsula region.

Settlement Services provide assistance funded by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada aimed at helping newcomers integrate into Canadian life through language training as well as citizenship support along with guidance on accessing education or sports opportunities.

Community Initiatives target systemic issues such as poverty or racism while addressing mental health challenges alongside rural homelessness issues; they include youth-focused support systems plus community justice initiatives along with homelessness response efforts developed together with Bruce County Housing.

Together these various programs offer accessible pathways towards personal development within supportive environments promoting community engagement across Grey & Bruce Counties.

This expansion shows how committed the YMCA remains towards igniting potential within individuals by opening its doors right here downtown Port Elgin making it easier than ever before for locals within Bruce County benefiting from all they have on offer!
