Two individuals suffered minor injuries after their small recreational aircraft went down Friday afternoon in a gravel pit close to the Port Elgin airport.

The single-engine plane ended up on its roof at the Keith Snyder Construction gravel pit, located across Highway 21 from the airport.

“The two occupants of the plane were treated on scene and transported to Southampton hospital by Bruce County EMS for further observation. They’re expected to make a full recovery as their injuries were minor in nature. The plane is severely damaged,” Saugeen Shores Fire Chief Phil Eagleson said in an interview.

He mentioned that the man and woman, who are not residents of Grey-Bruce, managed to exit the wrecked aircraft without assistance.

“I can’t confirm for sure, but it’s believed they were landing at our local airport,” he said. “We believe they were on final approach to the airport when something happened.”

The plane remained at the gravel pit Friday evening, with the area secured by the Saugeen Shores Police Service. Transport Canada is looking into what happened. The plane might stay there for a while as part of the investigation.

A cause has not been determined yet, Eagleson noted, but weather conditions did not contribute to the crash.

The call about the incident was received around 12:40 p. m.

A total of twenty-seven firefighters from Saugeen Shores’ two fire stations responded, alongside Bruce County paramedics and Saugeen Shores police officers.

The airport and gravel pit are situated just south of Port Elgin’s town limits, north of Concession Road 4.

Eagleson stated that firefighters put out a small fire in the plane’s engine, provided first aid, helped secure the aircraft and contained some fuel that had leaked from it.
