Pickering magician Kameron Marshall was eliminated in the semi-finals of America’s Got Talent

A Pickering magician who transformed his classroom viewings of America’s Got Talent into a shot on the show saw his journey come to an end in the semi-finals last week, which he described as a “wild ride.”

“Semi-finalist on America’s Got Talent doesn’t sound too bad. From Pickering to the big stage is kind of crazy,” said ‘close-up’ magician Kameron Marshall after being outvoted by Olivia Befus and her three performing dogs on Sept. 16. “I’m grateful for this entire experience. It’s been a hell of a journey.”

Marshall, who was inspired by his Grade 8 teacher at John A. Macdonald Public School (now Biidassige Mandamin) in Pickering’s Bay Ridges neighbourhood, mentioned that he “learned a lot about show business, how these TV shows operate behind the scenes, and about myself,” during his time on the show.

The bright lights of Season 21 of America’s Got Talent are a far cry from those early classroom viewings as a middle schooler back in Pickering.

“Our teacher, Mr. Hendy, used to put the show on in class, but only auditions from magicians,” Marshall told INsauga while back in Pickering in July. “He wasn’t a magician himself but he was a huge fan and would ask us to go home and learn magic and try to fool him.”

“A few of us did it but by high school I was the only one who kept at it,” he said.

Marshall’s time on the long-running show taught him to “trust his gut” and never change who he is, “on or off the camera.”

“I’m grateful I was able to make it this far doing what I love, and not faking or acting like something I’m not,” he shared in a post on his socials. “I stepped out of my comfort zone and learned how to be calm and collected amidst the chaos. I felt more confident each time I stepped back onto that stage and believe I have what it takes to be a world-class performer.”

He also realized, as celebrity judge and Canadian comic legend Howie Mandel pointed out, that “America loves dogs,” after both Befus and the Acro Canine Crew qualified for the ten-act final along with their chance at winning $1 million on Sept. 23.

“This was a lot of fun but it’s just the beginning of something great. I see this experience as just a stepping stone,” Marshall stated. “If you’re reading this, I hope you find what you love and are passionate about and try to create something from it. The journey is where the fun lies.”
