The refurbishment of the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station will prolong the operation of four reactors by up to 38 years, generating around 30,500 jobs each year during construction and 7,500 jobs across Canada throughout its operational life.
Contracts totaling $3 billion are set to be awarded. According to a provincial statement, this project will inject $17 billion into the economy of Durham and Ontario.
Utilizing Canadian technology and an Ontario-based supply chain, this refurbishment is projected to add $41.6 billion to Canada’s GDP, with over 90 percent of project expenditures remaining within Ontario and Canada, as stated by the province.
Key contracts granted to suppliers in Ontario for this initiative include:
Aecon Group Inc. and Candu Energy, an Atkins Réalis company, for executing the Pickering Unit 5 Retube, Feeder and Boiler Replacement (RFBR) project valued at about $1.7 billion. Aecon Group Inc. and Siemens Energy Canada for Turbine Generator Replacement involving the installation of 14 steam turbine rotors, complete stator rewinds, overhauling four generators, providing new auxiliary systems and a control and monitoring system worth approximately $1.3 billion. Will Add $17bn To Durham, Ontario Economy
This refurbishment is expected to produce over $17 billion in economic activity throughout Durham Region and Ontario while creating opportunities for local businesses and communities. Building on Ontario’s extensive nuclear expertise as well as lessons learned from the successful Darlington Refurbishment Project-which finished ahead of schedule and under budget-a new training facility covering 200,000 square feet will prepare more than 2,800 skilled trades workers before refurbishment activities commence. This aims to strengthen both Ontario’s workforce and its made-in-Ontario nuclear supply chain.
After receiving approval from the Ontario government for Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) refurbishment plan, the Pickering B units (Units 5 to 8) will cease operations by September 2026. When completed, the refurbished station is set to provide up to 2,200 megawatts (MW) of dependable power-enough energy for about 2.2 million homes. The refurbishment process will involve replacing 1,520 fuel channels along with 48 boilers while constructing a deep-water intake that stretches for 1.5 kilometers. With site construction starting on Monday, reactor refurbishments will kick off pending final approval from the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) in January 2027.
Trump Tariffs
“As President Trump continues targeting Ontario’s economy, our government is taking steps to secure our energy future with construction beginning on the Pickering Nuclear Generating Station refurbishment-the largest clean energy infrastructure project in Canada,” said an official statement from the Ontario government.
“Today [Sep 21], we celebrate a national milestone as we initiate work on Canada’s largest clean energy infrastructure project while bolstering our made-in-Ontario nuclear supply chain. The best way for us in Ontario to respond against President Trump’s actions is through ambitious building initiatives; thus we’re supporting job creation that results in over 30 thousand positions alongside securing another three decades’ worth of clean power.” said Stephen Lecce, Minister of Energy and Mines.
“By creating over thirty thousand jobs while generating billions in economic activity along with enhancing our local nuclear supply chains-it delivers lasting advantages not only for workers but also families in Pickering as well as communities throughout our province,” said Peter Bethlenfalvy representing Pickering-Uxbridge.
The Timeline
In September 2022 , the provincial government announced OPG would continue operating “B” units (units five through eight) at Pickering until September twenty-sixth unless CNSC disapproves.
In October twenty-fourth , CNSC permitted operation extensions till end-of-2026 which means full refurbishments are necessary afterward. In December twenty-fourth , OPG finalized its early phase including engineering designs alongside securing long-lead components needed moving forward into refurbishments phases planned continuing through next year ending June two-thousand twenty-six. The government approved OPG’ s move toward defining project specifics effective January twenty-five paving pathway towards crucial works ahead target completion later next year leading into November then bringing forth agreement surrounding reactor restorations approvals thereafter.
