An Oshawa man is facing charges for impaired driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and nine other offenses after a police cruiser was struck at a Pickering intersection early Wednesday morning.
Two cruisers were responding to a call just after 3 a. m. when they were turning left onto Kingston Road from Whites Road. A driver in an eastbound Audi SUV reportedly ran a red light, narrowly avoiding the first police car after hitting the brakes but then speeding through the intersection and crashing into the second cruiser.
The Audi driver attempted to escape on foot, according to police, but officers located him and took him into custody.
The officer in the impacted cruiser was taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Alberto-Marius Renghea, 24, has been charged with impaired driving causing bodily harm, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to provide assistance at an accident scene, running a red light, refusing to take a breathalyzer test, along with several other driving violations as he was found operating the Audi with a G1 license.
He has been released on an undertaking.
