Police report that three people have died and two others sustained serious injuries following a head-on crash on Highway 7 close to Pickering Tuesday evening.

The accident took place near Concession Road 6. Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police’s (OPP) Toronto detachment responded to the incident around 7 p. m., according to a news release issued Wednesday.

“It’s absolutely tragic knowing that three lives were lost in a preventable accident, as we’re trying to figure out what led to this collision,” said OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt.

He mentioned that the crash is currently under investigation, but speed, weather, and alcohol do not seem to be contributing factors at this point.

A vehicle carrying four individuals traveling westbound veered into oncoming traffic and collided head-on with another vehicle heading eastbound, stated Schmidt.

The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle in the eastbound lane, an 82-year-old woman from Port Perry, was declared dead at the scene, according to police.

Two female passengers sitting in the back seats of the westbound car, aged 63 from Markham and 68 from Scarborough, were also pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of that vehicle along with a third passenger were taken to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.

Schmidt noted that everyone seemed to be wearing seatbelts during the crash.

He urged any witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage from around the time of the incident to reach out to the OPP.

Witness Describes ‘Haunting’ Scene

Belinda La Belle-Logan, who owns a garden center and equestrian facility nearby, said she heard a loud boom on Tuesday and rushed outside with her husband to witness the “haunting” scene.

“You couldn’t see the front end of the car. There was debris scattered across all four lanes,” she recalled. “I didn’t sleep last night. It’s something I’ll probably never forget.”

La Belle-Logan mentioned she started assisting the driver of the westbound vehicle who was unconscious on the ground intermittently.

But there was no hope for those passengers in back when they checked on them, she said.

“I checked for a pulse; there were no signs. So yeah, that was hard to take in.”... La Belle-Logan expressed concern over how many accidents she’s witnessed on Highway 7 between Salem Road and Westney Road. She hopes local authorities can take action soonto make it “a safer place.”
