A procession will be held on Thursday afternoon as the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) escorts Sergeant Brandon Malcolm’s body from Toronto to Oshawa. This comes three days after the veteran officer lost his life in a motorcycle accident while on duty in Cobourg.

The OPP has announced that the procession will leave the Centre of Forensic Sciences in Toronto at around 1 p. m., traveling east along Highway 401 toward Oshawa. Only vehicles approved by the OPP and designated personnel will participate.

Members of the public who want to pay their respects are encouraged to safely gather on overpasses between Keele Street and Thickson Road South, joining first responders lining the route. Authorities are asking people not to stop on the highway or block traffic.

The procession will also be streamed live on the OPP’s You Tube channel.

Sgt. Malcolm, 33, tragically died on Monday when he crashed while riding a police motorcycle on Highway 401 near Burnham Street North in Cobourg. He was declared dead at the scene. Malcolm joined the OPP in 2020 and spent his entire career with the Northumberland detachment.

Tributes have been pouring in from across Ontario. OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique stated that the service is “grieving this tremendous loss,” while Premier Doug Ford expressed condolences to Malcolm’s family and colleagues.

An online book of condolences has been opened at opp. ca/news, where members of the public can share messages for Malcolm’s family and colleagues. Funeral arrangements are still being finalized.

The OPP expressed appreciation for the “compassion and support” shown by first responders and community members during what they called an extraordinarily difficult week for their service.
