Ottawa’s Victoria Day Openings and Closures

As Ottawa prepares for the long weekend, it’s a good idea to check what will be open and closed this Monday for Victoria Day.

This federal holiday signals the unofficial start of summer for many, but it also means that several businesses and public services will be closed for the day. 

Recent changes have taken Victoria Day off Ontario’s Retail Business Holidays Act, allowing businesses to stay open on May 18. Previously, this holiday was treated similarly to Christmas Day and Canada Day under the act alongside Family Day.

Now retailers have the choice to keep their doors open, giving employees the option to take a day off or work at time-and-a-half pay. 

Here’s a summary of what you can expect to be open or closed in Ottawa on that day. It’s always smart to double-check with specific services or businesses.

Shopping

As mentioned earlier, major grocery stores and various shopping centers can decide whether they want to operate on Monday, which is different from past years. They might opt for shorter hours as well.

The Bayshore, Place d’Orléans, Rideau Centre, St. Laurent and Tanger malls will all remain open until 6 p. m.

The LCBO plans to operate 304 locations across Ontario from 10 a. m. until 6 p. m. Customers can use the LCBO store locator tool to find out when Ottawa stores are open. 

The Beer Store will have six locations in Ottawa operating from 11 a. m. until 6 p. m.

Transit and parking 

OC Transpo will follow a Sunday schedule on holiday Monday, with Line 1 of the O-Train running from 8 a. m. until 11 p. m.

Lines 2 and 4 will run slightly longer hours from 7:30 a. m. until 11:30 p. m. 

If you rely on Para Transpo, please note that all regular bookings or recurring trips for Monday are automatically canceled. You can book trips online or call 613-560-5000.

Please remember that all City of Ottawa parking rules remain active on Monday.

Recreation and cultural activities

While all municipal child care centers will be closed for Victoria Day, some community centers and recreation facilities may stay open with adjusted hours and drop-in schedules.

The National Gallery of Canada is set to welcome visitors along with museums dedicated to agriculture, aviation, history, nature, science, and war.

This Saturday marks the opening of thirty splash pads throughout Ottawa just in time for summer fun! Beaches and wading pools will welcome guests next month along with outdoor pools-except Crestview Pool which remains closed.

Restrooms at Britannia Beach, Mooney’s Bay Beach, and Petrie Island Beach will be available starting Saturday along with paid daytime parking options.

Certain City of Ottawa museums-including the Ottawa Art Gallery-will close their doors during this time.

Waste

No curbside collection for garbage bins or recycling services will occur on Monday; any scheduled garbage pickup shifts to Tuesday instead while other weekly collections are postponed by one day throughout the week.

Muli-residential garbage container pickups continue as scheduled; however collections involving multi-residential recycling containers bulky items as well as green bins face delays by one day during this week.

You’ll find Trail Road waste facility available between 9 a. m. to 5 . p. m.

Other city services
