The Special Investigations Unit of Ontario has reported that a police officer shot and fatally wounded a 28-year-old man in Brockville on Thursday evening.
The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) stated that one of their tactical and rescue units was assisting Brockville police with executing a search warrant at a residence near King Street West and Broad Street around 8 p. m.
The SIU mentioned on Friday afternoon that officers “encountered” the man, there was an “interaction,” and one OPP officer shot him using an unspecified firearm.
This man was later declared dead at a hospital, according to the unit. His identity has not been made public yet.
The SIU looks into whether police have violated any laws when they may be involved in a death or certain other serious incidents.
Typically, their investigations start with limited information being shared, with more details than would usually come from law enforcement provided in an extensive report months later.
In that report, the SIU can recommend either for or against criminal charges.
A post-mortem examination for the man is set for Saturday morning in Kingston, as noted by the SIU.
