As southern Ontario starts to dry out, Ottawa has just recorded its wettest month ever following slow-moving storms that passed through the area on Tuesday.

A stalled upper-level trough contributed to the heavy rain across southern and eastern Ontario this week. Consequently, Ottawa airport has set a new record for its wettest month (259.9 mm as of July 28), surpassing the previous record from July 2017.

Once again, the Ottawa and southern Quebec region may experience another day of wet and stormy conditions on Wednesday. Thanks to moisture coming in from the Gulf of Mexico, there’s a chance of heavy rain and localized flooding in parts of southern Quebec.

The main concern will arise if storms repeatedly pass over the same areas, leading to rapidly increasing rainfall totals. Localized flooding, reduced visibility, and hazardous driving conditions are all possible.

More Rain and Storms Expected on Wednesday

Showers and heavy rainfall might carry on into Wednesday and Thursday, with a growing likelihood of light precipitation lingering later on. Even though it will feel muggy outside, temperatures will actually be around or below seasonal averages.

Thunderstorms could also pop up again. Severe storms are expected to stay east of the low moving from south to north. Flooding remains a concern for regions like the Laurentians and Ottawa Valley.

This month’s rainfall in Ottawa has officially made it the wettest month since records began in 1938 at its airport. So far, they’ve documented 259.9 mm of rain as of July 28 afternoon.

The previous record for its wettest month was July 2017 when they recorded 249.8 mm of rain.

Conditions should gradually improve from Thursday into Friday, but more rain could return over Ontario’s August long weekend, so be prepared.
