Highway 401 was shut down after a few cows strolled onto the roadway east of Oshawa early Monday morning.

The westbound lanes close to Veronville were closed shortly after 2:30 a. m., according to the Ontario Provincial Police. Veronville is a small community located east of Cobourg.

The cows decided to take “an early morning stroll from a nearby field,” as noted by the OPP.

There were no accidents due to alert and careful drivers, police reported.

Officers helped the owner safely guide the animals back home near Vernonville.

“A reminder that hazards can come in all shapes and sizes-stay alert, slow down, and expect the unexpected… even if it mooo-ves,” the OPP said.
