With heavy hearts, we share the unexpected loss of our brother, William (Bill) Cavner, who passed away at home on May 18, 2026. Bill was born on May 9, 1966, in Fort William, ON, and was the youngest of four siblings. He was lovingly referred to as our “miracle baby” after a difficult birth and brought great happiness to our family, especially to his sister who finally had a “real baby” to care for. Despite facing physical and mental health challenges throughout his life, Bill always overcame them with resilience and strength.
Bill stood out as an exceptional student; he was the valedictorian of his Grade 8 class and excelled in debating during high school at FWCI. He earned an Honours Psychology degree from the University of Ottawa and a Medical Degree from the University of Toronto-achievements that made his family incredibly proud. He lived and worked in Ottawa, Toronto, and Hamilton before choosing to step back from medicine early to prioritize his well-being, eventually returning to Thunder Bay.
Some of our favorite childhood memories include family camping trips at Silver Islet and Little Mc Cauley Lake where we enjoyed time at the beach, fishing with Dad while listening to his stories, and learning card games from our “card shark” Mom. At age 11, Bill took an unforgettable trip to Australia with our parents where he met extended family members and explored the Great Barrier Reef.
Bill was a committed member of Redwood Park Church where his faith flourished. He dedicated years volunteering in the sound booth while forming meaningful friendships. Friends described him as a quiet yet brilliant man with thoughtful insights and a dry sense of humor.
After sustaining an injury in 2014 that led to quadriplegia, Bill maintained his independence thanks to support from family members, friends, church members, and rehab teams. He lived at the HAGI building where he served on their board and was respected for his innovative ideas aimed at improving life for those facing physical challenges.
Bill is survived by his sister Michele Krasnichuk (Carl); brothers Pat (Ademisia) and Jim (Anne Marie); along with numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. He was predeceased by his parents Harold and Claraine Cavner.
A Celebration of Bill’s Life will take place at Redwood Park Church on Tuesday, September 1, 2026 at 11:00 AM followed by a luncheon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill’s memory to HAGI or another charity of your choice.
