She was born on November 5, 1931 in Sioux Lookout and had called Thunder Bay home for the last 72 years.
Velma is survived by her daughters Cathy Desando (Vince) and Gayle Stewart (Frank Grassia), along with her daughter-in-law Wendy Wilen-O’Connor. She also leaves behind many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews. Velma was predeceased by her husband Dennis, her sons Dennis Jr. and Doug, her daughter Terri, her granddaughter Andrea Desando, her parents Charlie and Selma Halinen, and her sister Edna Naughton.
Mom was a homemaker who made sure our family of seven enjoyed a delicious homemade meal every single day, complete with a tasty dessert afterwards. We were the envy of the College street neighborhood.
SISU is a Finnish word that stands for strength and resilience; our mother/gramma truly embodied SISU throughout her life.
We’d like to extend our heartfelt thanks to the amazing staff who cared for Velma at both Roseview and previously at PR Cook Apartments. Her family appreciates all your help.
As she wished, there will be a private family interment. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to a charity of your choice.
