Susan Ann Mintenko (77) passed away at St. Joseph’s Health Centre (Toronto), on Tuesday, July 21, 2026.
Susan was born in Port Arthur on January 31, 1949 to William and Margaret Harju. She grew up in Kashabowie, Ontario, where her family ran the local general store. Susan attended Kashabowie School with her lifelong friends, known as the “Kashabowie Cuties.” After finishing elementary school, she moved to Thunder Bay to attend Port Arthur Collegiate Institute. Susan continued her education by training at the Mc Kellar General Hospital School of Medical Technology, graduating in 1969 as a Registered Medical Laboratory Technologist.
Susan started her career at Mc Kellar General Hospital until the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre opened in 2004. Throughout her 50 years of work, Susan was recognized for her high standards and professionalism. Loved by her coworkers, she built lasting friendships that continued even after she retired.
Susan lived life to its fullest. She had endless energy and was always on the go. Whether she was creating delicious meals in the kitchen or tending to her beautiful garden, she spread love and joy around her. With a busy social calendar, Susan cherished spending time with close friends and family. One of her greatest joys was traveling with loved ones-whether it meant cheering for her favorite Blue Jays team, exploring the mountains of Alberta, or relaxing on the beaches of the Dominican Republic; Susan was always ready for a new adventure. Living such an active life often led to peaceful naps with a cat or a book resting on her lap.
Susan will be fondly remembered by her children: Kristen (Sheldon), son Jonathan (Kristiina), and their father Alex; grandchildren William, Samantha, Andrew, Anthony, Jonah; sister Brenda; brother John (Laurie); nieces Erin (Dave), Jamie (Ryan); nephew John Jr. (Linda); great-nieces Raija, Penelope, Taylor; great-nephews Devon and Nathan; along with her beloved Maine Coons Luna and Lily.
She is predeceased by her father William and mother Margaret.
Susan embraced life right up until the end and showed us all how to live with love and integrity. We’ll hold our memories of our amazing mother, grandmother, sister, and aunt close to our hearts. She radiated beauty both inside and out. It’s hard to put into words just how blessed we feel to have had this extraordinary woman in our lives. Her spirit will stay with us forever.
Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Susan’s life will be held in her garden at 11:00 AM on Thursday, August 13, 2026. As we celebrate Susan’s life together please wear colorful casual attire suited for a garden setting. Family interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery.
