It is with deep sorrow that the family of Roberta Rutland (nee Sutch) announces her passing on July 20, 2026, at the age of 88.
Roberta was born in Fort William, Ontario on February 12th, 1938 to Steven and Mary (nee Kovacs) Sutch. Growing up on a farm, she had dreams of city life and spent time in Toronto and St. Catherines, Ontario where she took on various jobs; working in fields like accounting, law, politics, and publishing. After coming back to Thunder Bay, she worked for Canada Post until her retirement.
The greatest joy in Roberta’s life was her family. Besides watching the Blue Jays and Britbox, her favorite pastime was being with her son and grandchildren. She had a talent for storytelling and loved sharing tales from her adventures in Southern Ontario, her years in Westfort, and growing up on the farm with her pet pig Smoky. Cooking was another passion of hers; she treated her grandchildren to delicious Hungarian meals that Granny would prepare. Roberta also enjoyed reading; having a Kindle membership made perfect sense for her. With a sharp mind for numbers, she often played math games on her i Pad.
Roberta is survived by her son Jay (Lana), along with grandchildren Hayley, Sydney, and Calum, their mother Tracy Swartz, step-grandchildren Andre (Kasey) and Dawson, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews who will hold fond memories of her. She is predeceased by Ian Paull who was her life partner, grandson Baby Jesse, both parents, five sisters, and three brothers.
Cremation has taken place. A private celebration of life will occur later with immediate family.
The family wishes to express gratitude to the staff of 1A and 3C at TBRHSC-especially nurse Fola and Dr. Oyella-for their attentive care during this time.
