Sendel Henry Barr, age 87, of Centerville, passed away Monday, March 9, 2026 at Mercy One Hospital in Des Moines.

Sendel Barr was a kind-hearted man who had a steady faith and enjoyed the little things in life. He was born on June 2, 1938, in Weaver Settlement, Nova Scotia, Canada, to William and Laura (Lewis) Barr. Growing up in a close community shaped his strong faith that influenced his life’s journey.

Feeling called to serve others, Sendel studied at Alberta Bible College in Alberta, Canada and later pursued further theological education at Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis, Indiana. He dedicated many years to pastoring churches across Canada and the United States, providing guidance and support to those he served.

Beyond his church duties, Sendel found joy in everyday treasures. He loved exploring garage sales and thrift stores for unique finds. His passion included collecting watches, clocks, and hats-each item reflecting his personality and appreciation for time.

Sendel enjoyed peaceful drives in his Ford car to places that brought him happiness. Trips to Lake Thunderhead were among his favorites along with visits to Ye Old Town Square in Cincinnati, Iowa. He treasured lighthearted conversations over coffee with friends throughout Iowa.

In his Shamrock neighborhood, Sendel became a familiar face loved by many. While some neighbors might have forgotten his name at times, they affectionately called him “Preacher,” which suited him well given the warmth and faith he shared wherever he went.

Sendel will be remembered for his commitment to ministry and friendly chats that left a mark on so many lives. His life embodied faithfulness and simple joys found in daily moments.

He is survived by his nephew Clary Prime; niece Shanna Prime; sister-in-law Hilda Barr; as well as several close friends.

Sendel was preceded in death by his parents William and Laura Barr; brothers Gordon Barr and Lester Barr; sisters Annie Dennison, Della Prime, Dora Bell; along with an infant sister named Jean.

Visitation will take place Friday, March 13, 2026 at Thomas Funeral Home in Centerville with family greeting friends from 10:00AM-11:00AM. Funeral services are set for 11:00AM on Friday March 13th at Thomas Funeral Home with Pastors Dave Welch and Reg Higginbottom officiating. Burial will follow later at Weymouth Cemetery located in Nova Scotia Canada. Memorials may be sent either to Disciple Heritage Fellowship or Centerville Church of Christ or another charity of your choice addressed to Thomas Funeral Home ATTN: Barr Family 501 North 18th Street Centerville Iowa 52544.
