It is with heavy hearts that we share the news of Alan Cavell’s passing. Alan lived his life with integrity, determination, and unwavering commitment. He was a cherished partner to Jacqueline Powell, father and stepfather to Stuart, Matthew (Charlotte), Amy (Paul), and Vanessa (Michael); and a proud Grandpa to Maeve, Rowan, Darragh, Euan, Callum, and Nolan. Alan was predeceased by three infant grandsons.

Alan was born in Owen Sound, Ontario, to Sidney and Rachel Cavell. He spent his childhood on a farm in Sarawak Township, helping out with farm chores from an early age. As the youngest of seven siblings, he was preceded in death by Bill, Joan, Phyllis, Marjorie, Gayle and is survived by Kaye. He took great pride in being an uncle to many nieces and nephews and is fondly remembered by numerous other relatives, friends, and community members.

After finishing high school, Alan left the farm behind to pursue a degree in Political Studies & Public Administration at the University of Guelph. A proud alumnus of Guelph, he continued there to earn a Master of Science in Extension Education that focused on non-formal community education as well as leadership and outreach efforts. His lifelong passion for making a difference within the community drove him throughout his career.

Alan dedicated his entire career to living out his values of compassion and social justice. In the beginning stages of his career as Program Supervisor for the Ministry of Community and Social Services he contributed to countless programs designed to help older adults live healthy and independent lives. For instance, Alan’s vision played a key role in establishing Community Care organizations across Ontario.

After many years serving as Program Supervisor, Alan transitioned into the role of Executive Director at Victoria Manor Home for the Aged in Lindsay-a position that marked one of his greatest professional passions that lasted many years. In this capacity at VON branches he led efforts to expand services while stabilizing programs across Hastings County along with Northumberland County as well as Peterborough region including North Bay , Durham , Kingston , Calgary , and Ottawa.

Upon retirement Alan took on new challenges by becoming self-employed-buying , renovating , and leasing three family homes. Tenants recognized his values alongside commitment towards quality service where one tenant affectionately referred him as “an earth angel.” Additionally , he devoted time towards several volunteer initiatives like Community Care Peterborough , Thrive, and Universal Basic Income.

Alan will be fondly remembered for his witty sense of humor coupled with kindness , generosity, and quiet strength. Family members, friends, and colleagues will deeply miss him.

A Celebration of Life event will take place on Saturday May 2nd from 1 pm until 4 pm at Holiday Inn Peterborough.

If you wish, to honor Alan’s memory donations can be made either towards VON Canada or any charity you prefer.
