It is with a heavy heart that we share the news of Luana (nee Rowlings) Royal’s passing at Hospice Simcoe, Barrie, Ontario on Friday, May 29th, 2026 after a short but brave battle with leukemia. She was preceded in death by her parents Phillip and Margaret Rowlings.
Luana leaves behind her husband of 50 years, Brian, along with their four children: Katie (Clint), Mary (Adam), Susan (Adam), and Jonathan (Whitney), as well as her six grandchildren-Ethan, Reid, Maria, Mallory, Emerson, and Bridget. She is also survived by her twin brother Hoodie (Helga) from Newfoundland and her niece Didi (Darrell).
Growing up on the Northwest Arm in Halifax, Luana loved swimming and trained as a lifeguard. She met Brian while attending Dalhousie University and they tied the knot in Halifax in 1975. They raised their family in Amherst, Nova Scotia where she worked at the School for the Deaf. The family cherished camping trips and made wonderful memories at Kejimkujik National Park. Later on, they moved to Barrie, Ontario where she served as an itinerant hearing resource teacher. Luana was very active at Northwest Barrie United Church; she sang in the choir and helped run the nursery. Gardening was one of her passions; she often spent time working in her yard while chatting with neighbors. In retirement, they enjoyed taking their travel trailer back to Nova Scotia every summer to explore other parts of Canada.
Visitation will take place at Legacy Funeral Home, 55 Cedar Pointe Drive, Barrie (Parking and entrance on Hwy 400 side of building) on Sunday, June 7, 2026 from 2-4 p. m., followed by visitation on Monday June 8, 2026 at Northwest Barrie United Church, 464 Ferndale Drive North, Barrie from 12 – 12:45 p. m., with the service starting at 1 o’clock p. m. Light refreshments and a time for fellowship will be held afterward in Westennial Hall.
In lieu of flowers (due to severe scent allergies), donations can be made in Luana’s name to the Arthritis Society of Canada or to Royal Victoria Hospital or Northwest Barrie United Church. Throughout her fight against leukemia she greatly appreciated those who donated blood. In her honor, please think about giving blood as a gift of life.
A burial will take place later this summer in her beloved Nova Scotia.
