In the early hours of March 25th, 2026, Joan Johnson went to be with the Lord in Heaven, surrounded by her loved ones. While we feel a profound sadness at her departure, we recognize that she could no longer bear the pain.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, at Ascension Catholic Church in Bismarck, ND.

Visitation is scheduled for Tuesday, March 31st, from 5:00-7:00 PM at Bismarck Funeral Home, concluding with a Rosary and Vigil Service at 7:00 PM.

Joan (Tremblay) Johnson was born in Tisdale, SK, Canada on December 8th, 1961; on the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary. She was born to Lawrence & Nora Marie (Casavant) Tremblay. As the youngest of eight siblings, Joan often shared stories about her life in rural Canada-like picking wild berries and apples to bring home for her mother to turn into jelly and pies. She mentioned how she often ate as many berries as she collected.

In 1969 Joan lost her father Lawrence. In 1970, her mother Nora married Roland Mongeon from Rolette, ND. Soon after that, Joan and her mother moved to the United States and settled on the family farm just south of Dunseith, ND. She graduated from Dunseith High School in 1979.

After graduation Joan relocated to Grand Forks where she met Steve Johnson. They tied the knot on May 17th, 1980. That September marked the arrival of their son. By early 1981 they had moved to Dickinson, ND but later went to Huntington Beach, California when the oil boom ended.

In 1987 Joan returned to Dickinson with her son. By 1993 she graduated Summa Cum Laude from DSU with a degree in Early Childhood Education along with a Kindergarten teaching certificate.

Once her son completed high school, Joan took up an opportunity to care for her aging parents back in Dunseith. With a natural talent for caregiving and providing support so they could stay home until their passing meant everything to her. After over ten years as their caregiver and following their passing in 2013 she chose retirement.

Becoming a grandmother in 2012 brought great joy into Joan’s life. After retiring she decided to settle down in Bismarck so that she could be near her son and his family. She never missed any games or events for her grandchildren and always showed up enthusiastically cheering them on-often equipped with plastic hand clappers!

She cherished time spent with family and friends while traveling during retirement; those moments were very important to her. She bravely battled cancer twice-and came out victorious both times! Her tenacity made her an inspiring figure for many around her. We will all miss her greatly.

Joan is survived by her son Joshua Steven Johnson along with his wife Melissa and their children Nora and Owen-as well as many close friends plus several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; Roland; sister Jeanne; brothers Marcel, Edgar, Victor, George, Joseph, and Maurice.
