It is with deep sadness that the family of James “Jim” Alexander Mitchell announce his passing on May 6, 2026, in Huntsville, Ontario, at the age of 81.

Born on July 26, 1944, in Peterborough, Ontario, Jim lived a full and adventurous life marked by curiosity, creativity, and genuine connection with others. A man of many talents and a lifelong learner, Jim explored a wide variety of careers and passions throughout his life. He served as a police officer, worked with Shell Canada, and was perhaps best known as the proud owner of The Oxtongue Craft Cabin for 16 years, where he became a familiar and beloved presence in the community.

Jim embraced life wholeheartedly. His interests and hobbies were as varied as they were impressive – from flying to gardening to fitness to motorcycles to music. He was an amazing skier in downhill skiing, cross country skiing, telemark skiing and heliskiing. He had a deep appreciation for Canadian art, literature, and photography. Above all else, Jim had an extraordinary gift for friendship. He never met a person who didn’t quickly become a friend.

Jim will be lovingly remembered by his siblings Donna (Joslin), Bob (Dawna), Debra (Sutherland), Joanne (Art Graham), and Brenda (Lucarelli), as well as by his many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his siblings Jack, Heather (Good), Carol, and Steve.

The family is grateful for the many memories, stories, and kindness shared by all who knew him. Jim’s warmth, humour, adventurous spirit, and generosity will be deeply missed and fondly remembered.

A gathering of family and friends to celebrate Jim’s remarkable and impactful life will be announced at a later date.

In memory of Jim, donations may be made to The Salvation Army https://thesalvationarmyhuntsville. ca/or the Ontario SPCA & Humane Society Muskoka Animal Centre https://ontariospca. ca/muskoka/
