Woodstock, Ontario
On June 29th, 2026 Peter Hargreaves Barrett lost his battle with pancreatic cancer after a brave five years. He is survived by his wife and partner Chris. Pete and Chris marked their 60th wedding anniversary on June 18, 2026 surrounded by their loving family.
Pete was a devoted father to Steven (Lee-Ann), Brian (Tricia), and Erin (Doug) White. He was also a proud granddad to Samantha, Stephanie, Quentin, Coen, Caris, and Aidan. He leaves behind his beloved siblings Penny (Lefteris) Iliadis, twin sister Christine (late Hugh) Mc Leod, Richard (late Lolly), along with nine nieces and nephews and many great nieces and nephews.
Pete was born on May 13, 1943 in Derby, Derbyshire, England to Kenneth and Audrey Barrett. When he was four years old, the family moved to Buenos Aires, Argentina where they lived for six years before returning to England for one year. They then emigrated to Canada in November of 1953 and settled in Kingston. Pete enjoyed a close bond with his siblings; he and Chris often spent lively afternoons discussing various topics with them.
Teaching was Pete’s profession of choice. Over a fulfilling 32-year career teaching chemistry, biology, and math, he made a significant difference in the lives of thousands of students. His other passion was computers; he played a key role in advancing computer technology at Central Algoma Secondary School (CASS) located in Desbarats, Ontario. He led the Science department for many years before retiring from teaching in 1998.
Pete and Chris shared a love for travel that took them across the Atlantic as well as adventures to Antarctica and the Arctic Circle. They had a particular fondness for sailing on open waters. At age 76, Pete took part in an exciting trek to the base camp of Mt. Everest alongside his granddaughter Samantha; adventure always called him.
Pete had a special way with dogs; sadly he leaves behind his loyal companion Woody. The pair were frequently seen running or walking through Woodstock near their home. In pursuit of a fulfilling lifestyle together as farmers, they bought a 75-acre farm in Thessalon, Ontario in 1974 where they raised their family along with various animals for many joyful years before relocating to Woodstock in 2011.
Pete has been cremated and there will be a Celebration of Life on Saturday July 4th, 2026 from 1:30 to 4:00 p. m. at the Woodstock Polish Hall Small Hall located at 878 Dufferin St., Woodstock, Ontario.
