Later this month, Oakville will kick off the long-anticipated $7.5-million upgrade of Towne Square. The Town is committed to a phased approach that aims to keep downtown shops, homes, and activities accessible during the construction.

The work is tentatively set to start the week of Sept. 14 and should wrap up by September 2027. CRCE Construction Group has been chosen as the general contractor for this project.

This initiative will reshape Towne Square, located in the heart of Downtown Oakville, into a more accessible and lively public area. For over 35 years, the square has been a community hub, supporting local businesses and hosting various events and activities.

“This revitalization will create an even more welcoming and vibrant gathering place for residents, visitors, and local businesses to enjoy for years to come,” Mayor Rob Burton said.

The reconstruction was initially approved back in 2018 but was put on hold in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In October 2025, Oakville’s council approved another pause to allow for further discussions with downtown businesses and the community.

This feedback helped shape the “Optimal Phasing Plan” that was approved by council in May 2026.

Town staff will collaborate with businesses, residents, and community partners throughout construction to provide updates and manage any impacts as they occur.

Active construction zones will be surrounded by decorative hoarding, with clearly marked entry and exit points for accessing businesses. Wayfinding signs will guide visitors toward open shops and amenities.

Construction staging and worker parking will be relocated off-site to ease congestion; extended work hours will only be allowed when necessary. Town staff are also planning ways to control noise and dust from construction activities.

A break in construction is tentatively scheduled for November 2026 so it doesn’t interfere with the holiday season; work is expected to resume in early 2027 if weather permits.

When it’s finished, Towne Square will feature amphitheater-style seating for gatherings and events, a unique water feature, raised planters filled with new trees, plus improved landscaping.

The plans also include new seating areas, an updated central lawn space, decorative lighting features, and accessible paving all around the square.

The Millennium Tower Clock currently found in Towne Square will be removed before construction begins but stored safely until it can be returned after everything is complete.

You can track progress on this project through Oakville’s Towne Square Revitalization Project webpage.
