A Michelin-starred restaurant in Ontario, celebrated as one of the finest in Canada, has officially closed its doors for good and has already been succeeded by a new establishment.
When Toronto’s Michelin guide extended its reach beyond the city, it was an obvious choice to include Oakville’s Hexagon. In fact, Hexagon’s closeness to Toronto might have influenced the jury’s decision to embrace the Greater Toronto Area and beyond.
Led by talented Chef Rafa Covarrubias, the restaurant was truly exceptional. Nestled in what seemed like an ordinary location, the cuisine was anything but average. By blending global flavors with Canadian ingredients, Covarrubias crafted something unique at Hexagon.
However, in December 2025, Covarrubias left Oakville to take over the kitchen at 20 Victoria, which also holds a Michelin star. With his exit, Hexagon shut down temporarily.
This temporary closure turned out to be permanent when Centro on the Square opened at the same Lakeshore Road East address that once housed Hexagon in mid-June.
While Hexagon’s signature honeycomb-shaped chandeliers are still there, its replacement seems to have embraced a more traditional approach with its new concept.
The menu now offers familiar yet impressive options instead of previous dishes like Hokkaido scallops with mole verde, brown butter and caviar.
Centrally inspired by various cuisines, Centro on the Square features hearty meat dishes alongside seafood starters and pastas. It remains uncertain if this new spot will achieve the same acclaim as its predecessor; however, for now, there’s nothing unappealing about Centro’s offerings.
If you’re missing Chef Covarrubias’ renowned cooking style, you can still find it – at least for now – at 20 Victoria.
Hexagon was located at 210 Lakeshore Rd. E. in Oakville.
