Unused government land in north Oakville is about to become two new Schlegel Villages long-term care homes.

The 640-resident project is made possible by the province’s surplus lands program that aims to build LTC beds where they are most needed.

Once completed, this development, located at 2150 William Halton Pkwy., close to Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital, will be called The Village of Heritage Trails. It will feature 554 new and 86 upgraded spaces, creating two homes with 320 beds each.

Each home will have 10 resident areas for up to 32 residents, complete with their own dining and activity spaces along with bedrooms.

The homes will connect on the first floor and will include a main street with a library, spiritual centre, café and common areas as well as a health centre, spa, corner store and pharmacy. Schlegel Villages also plans to add retirement housing as part of future site development.

This project will provide new homes for residents currently living at Erin Mills Lodge, a Schlegel Village Community acquired around 2016.

“When construction is complete, those (Erin Mills Lodge) residents and the bed allocations will move to Heritage Trails, and every team member will also have the opportunity to move as well,” said Schlegel Villages director of communications Kristian Partington.

The facility expects its first residents in summer 2028. During construction, it’s projected to create around 700 jobs in the building industry and once it opens, about 1,000 good-paying positions including full-time roles in nursing, personal support work, nutrition services, programming and administration.

These projects receive funding from both the construction subsidy and the time-limited CFS top-up introduced in 2022.

The CFS is a financial support initiative provided by the province aimed at assisting in building, redeveloping and upgrading LTC home beds.

This development aligns with the Ontario government’s ongoing effort towards its goal of building 58,000 new and upgraded long-term care beds across the province as detailed in the 2026 Ontario Budget: A Plan to Protect Ontario.

The budget allocated for this initial long-term care phase of the project is $285 million.
