The police allege these crime groups were responsible for taking 100 vehicles throughout the Greater Toronto Area.
Now it’s their turn to understand what losing something feels like. In this case, it’s their freedom.
Their theft spree included vehicles taken from GO Transit stations, in front of homes or offices, and hotel parking lots throughout all of 2026. But Halton police have now apprehended several individuals they suspect are involved in these crimes.
The suspects are currently being held in custody. It’s hoped new bail conditions will take effect so they remain there for a while. This should be until all victims receive their insurance payouts and can replace their stolen vehicles-something that sometimes takes years.
“Auto theft is not a victimless property crime,” said Halton Regional Police Chief Stephen Tanner. “It is driven by organized criminal networks that profit at the expense of our communities and undermine public safety.”
The Halton police take serious measures when it comes to preventing organized crime aimed at stealing cars in their area. They’re clearly determined to stop this trend successfully.
Project Joker and Project Disconnect illustrate this commitment effectively.
“Both investigations involved organized crime groups believed to be responsible for a significant number of vehicle thefts throughout Halton as well as the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area,” stated HRPS. They added they’ve “dealt a significant blow to organized auto theft with two separate investigations completed in Oakville, resulting in multiple arrests and dozens of criminal charges.”
Tanner noted: “Every stolen vehicle creates risk-not just for the victim but for our officers and community members. Time after time we see stolen vehicles driven recklessly by offenders trying to evade police, putting innocent lives at risk.”
