Durham Regional Police Service (DRPS) is searching for a man linked to a SIM card swap scam investigation.
The DRPS Financial Crimes unit started looking into this case in October 2025 after an individual’s cellphone unexpectedly went into SOS mode and lost its connection to the cellular network.
According to police, when the individual reached out to their service provider, they discovered they had fallen victim to a SIM swap fraud scheme, where a scammer takes control of a phone number by switching it to another SIM card.
In this situation, investigators found that the suspect allegedly used the victim’s identity and phone number to bypass two-factor authentication and make purchases using the victim’s credit card information.
The suspect has been identified as Jessan Vernet-Fort, 31 years old from Oakville.
He is wanted on charges of fraud over $5,000, mischief/tampering with computer data, unauthorized use of a computer to access services, intercepting private information and two counts of unauthorized use of credit card information.
Police mention he has connections in both Ontario and Quebec.
Investigators have released two photographs showing the suspect with different hairstyles and are urging anyone who may know his whereabouts to get in touch with them.
