Downtown Oakville was buzzing this Family Day weekend – featuring fire shows, complimentary treats, and plenty of winter fun.

“It’s just a great way to celebrate Family Day. We’re gonna have a lot of families come out and I’m gonna be playing tunes for everyone that everyone’s going to hopefully sing along to and dance to,” said DJ Clymaxxx.

DJ Clymaxxx kicked off the event and kept the music going until 4 p. m., encouraging families to shake their winter boots.

But it wasn’t just the music that added some flavor. Sticky, sweet, and very Canadian maple taffy was being poured onto ice and disappearing quickly.

People weren’t only grabbing the sweets; they were also queuing up for freshly grilled halloumi harvest skewers. It showed that even in cold weather, good food can attract a crowd.

This marks the first annual Frost and Flame event during Family Day weekend in downtown Oakville, with organizers aiming to create a gathering for everyone.

“It’s good to get outside in February. I think we’re all done with hanging around on the couch; everybody wants to get out and have some music and have a celebration together,” said Susan Johnston from the Oakville BIA.

“We’re excited about this today. We’re gonna be very busy here due to Family Day, which is great,” said Danny from 7 Enoteca.

And judging by the turnout, they succeeded. Local businesses reported it as a welcome boost during wintertime.

Families peeked inside – quite literally – curious about all the excitement.

And when temperatures dropped? There was hot chocolate available and fire pits keeping fingers warm. A fire show also wowed crowds as flames danced against the chilly sky.

From frost on the ground to flames in the air, Frost and Flame heated up Family Day weekend. If today is any indication, winter in Oakville feels anything but cold.
