Road Closures Affecting Burlington and Oakville Drivers
In May, construction continues to move GO train tracks above Burloak Drive. Once complete, the new grade separation on Burloak Drive will allow trains to pass through the area without disrupting vehicle and pedestrian traffic, Metrolinx said. (City of Burlington)

A section of road at the border of Burlington, Ont., and Oakville will be closed from May 22 to June 1 for work aimed at raising train tracks above street level, which is expected to cause traffic and transit disruptions.

Burloak Drive will be off-limits to all vehicles and pedestrians between Harvester Road and Prince William Drive starting overnight Thursday at midnight. On the Oakville side, the closure extends from Wyecroft Road to Superior Court, as the road names change when crossing into another municipality.

The intersection of Burloak Drive and Prince William Drive/Superior Court will remain accessible during the closure, according to the city of Burlington. Visitors will still be able to reach 700-728 Burloak Dr., a commercial plaza that features several restaurants, a pharmacy, and a convenience store, via Prince William Drive.

This work is part of a project designed to raise train tracks so that trains can pass over Burloak Drive in the future instead of at street level as they do now. Metrolinx explains that this full closure is necessary for installing “the required grade-crossing infrastructure such as signal arms, which won’t be operational until all tracks have been moved onto the Burloak bridge.”

Metrolinx is collaborating with the City of Burlington and Town of Oakville on creating a rail-over-road underpass on Burloak Drive that aims to enhance safety and speed along the Lakeshore West GO line. A photo on Metrolinx’s website shows construction progress at the site in April. (Metrolinx)

Lakeshore West trains are set to cross over the new rail bridge after May 25, with two tracks shifting onto it during the weekend of May 23, followed by moving the final track after May 30 weekend, as confirmed by a Metrolinx spokesperson in an email sent to CBC Hamilton Thursday evening.

After this closure ends, construction will proceed on building the new roadway underpass, according to Metrolinx. Crews will also relocate and pave over the railway crossing on Burloak detour road while installing storm sewers south of where Burloak Drive meets Harvester Road/Wyecroft Road.

This construction work will lead to changes in transit services.

On Saturday and Sunday next week-and again on subsequent weekends-GO trains will run between Niagara Falls and Aldershot stations. Buses will make stops at West Harbour, Aldershot, Burlington, Oakville, and Clarkson GO stations before reaching Bramalea station. From there, riders can catch a Kitchener train heading toward Union Station. The GO website indicates there’ll be extra trains running on that line.

Workers Constructing Underpass for Vehicles

On its website, Metrolinx states this initiative-scheduled for completion in 2027-will facilitate quicker train service while allowing for additional lanes for vehicles.

“The grade separation, also known as a rail-over-road underpass, will enhance safety for the community by allowing trains to pass through without interrupting vehicular or pedestrian traffic,” it mentions. “This upgrade will also allow Metrolinx to safely increase train frequency on Lakeshore West line going forward.”

The transit agency aims for long-term improvements along Lakeshore West line which would enable hourly service throughout Hamilton and Toronto all day long-with hopes for every 15 minutes between Burlington and Toronto eventually.

The last Ontario budget allocated approximately $71 billion towards enhancing transit systems-a move deemed essential by province officials aiming to tackle congestion within Greater Golden Horseshoe region.
