A driver from Mississauga tried to convince police not to issue him a ticket but ended up with a stunt driving charge after being pulled over for going 201 km/h on the QEW in Oakville early last Wednesday.

The Ontario Provincial Police reported that the vehicle was clocked at twice the speed limit around 1 a. m. near Fourth Line on this busy highway.

The OPP Burlington detachment stated that when the officer stopped him, the driver asked if he could just get a warning instead of a ticket.

A 20-year-old man from Mississauga faced stunt driving charges and had his driver’s license suspended for 30 days, according to police. The car was impounded for 14 days.

In Ontario, stunt driving is defined as traveling at:

50 km/h or more over the speed limit where the posted limit is above 80 km/h 40 km/h or more over where the limit is 80 km/h or less a speed of 150 km/h or more on any road or highway

If drivers are caught stunt driving or street racing, they might face:

30-day license suspension at roadside 14-day vehicle impoundment at roadside (whether it’s your vehicle or not) minimum fine of $2,000 and a maximum of $10,000 jail term of up to six months six demerit points upon conviction, a further license suspension of one year for the first conviction, three to ten years for the second conviction and an indefinite suspension for third conviction

This incident on the QEW comes as OPP along with police in Peel and throughout the Greater Toronto Area conclude their annual awareness/enforcement campaign aimed at combating illegal street racing, stunt driving, and unauthorized car rallies.

This initiative is known as Project ERASE (Eliminating Racing Activities on Streets Everywhere). This multijurisdictional campaign runs each year from May through October and involves police officers from Peel, Toronto, Hamilton, Halton, York, Ontario Provincial Police and other areas actively targeting high-risk drivers.

The authorities say dangerous driving continues to be a concerning trend that endangers lives on roads and highways in Mississauga, Brampton, throughout GTA and across Ontario.
