Mississauga Council has voted to form a temporary Hyperscale Data Centre Task Force as the city looks into its policies and rules regarding large digital infrastructure facilities.
This task force comes after the Council approved an Interim Control By-law on Sept. 16, which paused the processing of new and existing applications for major digital infrastructure facilities for up to one year.
This pause gives city staff the chance to thoroughly review planning policies, zoning regulations, and development approval processes related to data centres.
The planned task force will serve as a platform for regular updates and input from stakeholders during this review. It will consist of members from Council, city planning staff, industry representatives, and citizens.
Members will get updates on the city’s progress and have chances to share their thoughts. The task force is also meant to ensure public transparency and reporting throughout this process.
Any recommendations that come out of this review will be presented to the Council for consideration. The task force will be disbanded once the review is finished and Council has looked at the recommendations.
The interim control by-law is in effect for major digital infrastructure facilities while the review takes place.
