Police near Toronto have stated that there’s no danger to public safety after responding late Monday to a call about dangerous weapons at a dormitory on the University of Toronto’s Mississauga campus.
The university issued a shelter-in-place notice for students close to the Mc Luhan Court residence, which accommodates many first-year students.
Peel Regional Police characterized the incident on social media as a dangerous weapons situation and advised people to avoid the area. Investigators reported that the issue was confined to one residential unit and there were no injuries reported.
In an update early Tuesday morning, police announced that the situation had been resolved and officers would remain present throughout the night.
Photos from the scene depicted police vehicles blocking roads near the dormitory while officers managed traffic flow.
“Further information will be provided as it becomes available,” Peel Regional Police mentioned in a social media post.
Police Responded Monday Night
Officers received a call regarding the situation at 9:11 p. m. on Monday. Shortly after 9 p. m., an alert was sent out by the university instructing students to shelter in place at UTM due to an “active threat.”
The school indicated it had been informed about police activity at Mc Luhan Court residence, located at 3330 Residence Road.
“Active threat. Take shelter immediately and secure doors,” it advised students via a post on social media platform X.
In a follow-up alert, the university noted that some areas around the residence remained blocked off.
The alert also mentioned that mental health and counselling resources are available for those who need support.
A spokesperson for Peel Regional Paramedic Services stated Monday night that police had requested them to stay nearby. The official confirmed that paramedics had not transported any patients to hospitals.
