A man from Mississauga is facing two counts of dangerous driving causing death after a tragic crash this summer on Highway 401 that claimed the lives of a father and daughter who were heading out of town for vacation.
The Ontario Provincial Police announced on Monday that charges have been filed following their investigation into the rear-end collision involving two vehicles that happened just before 9 a. m. in the eastbound express lanes near Dixie Road in Mississauga.
Ralph Crane, 80, and his daughter, Sheri-Lynn Crane-Gormley, 53, both hailing from Cambridge, died when the Honda CR-V they were riding in was hit from behind by a Mercedes SUV while traffic slowed down during rush hour.
The OPP did not release their names initially but confirmed that the victims who were pronounced dead at the scene had already been identified in an obituary shared by Corbett Funeral Home.
At the time of the incident, police mentioned that there were four individuals inside the vehicle that was rear-ended.
“The two other family members in the car were taken to hospital; one suffered serious injuries while the other had non-life-threatening injuries,” OPP stated in a news release on Monday.
The driver of the other vehicle was also sent to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as he was the only occupant of his vehicle.
The obituary revealed that Crane and Crane-Gormley were en route to Toronto Pearson Airport to kick off what had become their annual summer trip to Bell Island, N. L.
This trip held special significance for them since Bell Island is where Ralph and his wife Cynthia grew up and first met. They made it a tradition to return every year.
On Monday, OPP disclosed that due to their investigation findings, Samiul Kazmi, 56, from Mississauga has been charged with:
Dangerous operation causing death (two counts). Dangerous operation causing bodily harm (one count).
The accused was taken into custody and held for a bail hearing last Thursday but has since been released. He’s set to appear again at Brampton court on January 26, 2027.
