Three elderly individuals have sadly passed away in the hospital just days after a fire erupted at a house in Markham, spreading to other nearby homes early Friday morning.

Emergency responders were called to the location near Carleton and Kennedy roads shortly before 7 a. m. on June 5.

In an update to CP24 on Sunday, York regional police reported that all three residents who were hospitalized following the fire have now died.

The deceased include two women in their 70s and a man in his 80s.

Footage from Chopper 24 on Friday captured flames reaching at least one neighboring residence as firefighters battled to control the situation. Several homes in the vicinity were evacuated.

“When our crews arrived on scene, heavy smoke and fire from the first floor. One victim had been either removed by family members or had managed to self-evacuate,” Markham Fire Chief Chris Nearing previously told CP24.

He mentioned that two other residents were rescued by firefighters and handed over to paramedics.

Authorities earlier stated that two of the victims suffered serious injuries, while another had minor injuries.

Police also noted that there’s currently no evidence suggesting that the fire is suspicious. The cause remains undetermined, but investigators hope to provide more details soon.
