Omar Watson was outside smoking in the driveway when he heard someone calling his name.

It was one of the hottest nights of summer in their Brampton neighborhood, and Watson had spent time playing with his three-year-old daughter, Aria, after dinner.

He stepped outside while his wife, Melissa John – who was more tired than usual due to her pregnancy – laid down with Aria to sleep in their rented basement apartment.

“Smoke, fire, come quick!” shouted the tenant living above them.

He quickly followed her to the backyard, where thick black smoke poured out of a basement window.

“I can still recall that terrible smell. It’s something I’ll never forget,” Watson told a court later on.

“I ran into the house multiple times trying to reach my family,” he said. “I begged everyone around to help.”

Watson couldn’t get inside because of fireballs and felt like his skin was burning.

“The heat was unbearable, and my heart broke knowing that no matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t save them. This is something I relive every single day.”

Watson collapsed outside just before firefighters arrived at about 11 p. m. on June 2, 2023, to tackle the blaze.

Sadly, it was too late. John was declared dead at the scene while Aria was carried out by firefighters but later died in hospital.

This month, after a lengthy trial, Kassay Meskerem, the landlord of the property at 47 Jade Cres., received a sentence of 135 days in custody along with $60,000 in fines and victim surcharges for not installing smoke detectors or carbon monoxide alarms and failing to ensure proper fire separation between units. This marks the first time someone has been sentenced to jail for such offenses in Brampton – possibly setting a record for Ontario.

The sentence is viewed by some as an indication that courts are becoming stricter towards landlords who prioritize profit over safety and neglect basic safety measures-an ongoing concern in Brampton where high rental prices have forced newcomers and students into unsafe housing situations.

“Those who break laws putting lives at risk will be held responsible,” stated Brampton Fire Chief Andy Glynn after the sentencing decision.

Kassay claimed in court that there was a functioning smoke alarm in the unit which she checked annually. She is currently out on bail as she appeals her sentence. Additionally, she faces lawsuits from both Watson’s and John’s family members; she filed a defense stating she bears no responsibility for the fire that devastated their community and shattered this family’s life.

A family torn apart

Watson and John experienced “love at first sight,” he noted. When he held Aria for the first time he vowed to “always protect my little family,” according to his victim impact statement presented during Kassay’s sentencing hearing.

However, it was John who tragically died shielding Aria from flames with her own body. He described her as a “fiercely protective, fiercely loving woman.” She had aspirations for her future and wanted so much more out of life.

“Aria’s life was taken from her before it even began,” he expressed sorrowfully. “She was just starting to explore everything around her.”

The grief-stricken relatives of John remain too heartbroken to share much about her or Aria.

“Melissa had such compassion; she loved deeply,” said Eappen K. John from Malaysia via message.

“Right after graduating with a psychology degree and starting work; she immediately registered as an organ donor alongside joining World Wildlife Fund.” Her love for all living beings meant so much to her.”

Both Eappen K. John and Watson take solace knowing that – even amidst tragedy – perhaps other lives could be saved because of their family’s loss.

<p"While John's organs were unsuitable for donation due to damage sustained; Aria’s organs could potentially help other children.”

“Aria managed to become somewhat of a superhero despite everything,” said Watson proudly.

“She gave another child ‘a future,’ ‘a chance,’ something that would never be given back.”

The aftermath left Watson physically unable – following injuries sustained during those moments – from walking longer than few minutes or handling daily routines like bathing or writing independently.

Kassay continues renting

Kassay rents out two units located within 47 Jade Crescent which have undergone city inspection since then according tothe sentencing verdict. Kassay has applied for licensing under Brampton’s landlord licensing program. During sentencing hearings , Kassay -who has worked as hairdresser over thirty years – expressed not being heartless claiming she’d always treated tenants akin family. She also extended prayers along sympathies towards Mr. Watson. In Damota’s judgement letters praising Ms. Kassays’ efforts volunteering alongside church memberships were mentioned “I don’t consider Ms. Kassay bad nor do I believe intentioned these tragic events” Damota remarked however emphasizing negligence remains unchanged. Investigations led by fire marshals concluded origins lay within basement unit caused through ignition arising combustible materials (thermoplastic insulation wiring) colliding against polyurethane foam found enclosing walls entire room. Additionally alternative theory put forth alleging Mr. Watson fell asleep couch igniting himself marijuana resulting burns received ultimately dismissed bearing major inconsistencies witness accounts regarding night incidents occurred upon investigation processes concluding events leading up disastrous outcomes survived suffered immense consequences challenging realities faced thereafter throughout endless painful nights thereafter recollecting fires devastating impacts they endured together overcoming struggles moving forward toward healing journeys post-tragedy experiences faced together through shared memories formed beyond initial suffering phase encountered previously across whole ordeal surrounding previous traumatic experiences occurring ultimately unravelling precious bonds once made alive lingering forever throughout eternity reaching places beyond mortal existence itself experiencing transcendence joy restoring faith lost amidst chaotic world surroundings drawn hope continuous growth potential rediscovering strength resilience needed survive challenges yet forth.
