A significant fire has been brought under control at a scrap metal yard located in an industrial section of Brampton, according to officials who are still managing the situation.

The fire was reported on a commercial property near the intersection of Intermodal and Goreway drives on Tuesday evening, as shared by Brampton Fire and Emergency Services in a post on X.

As of Wednesday morning, most of the fire has been extinguished, with crews working on a few lingering hotspots, said Ron Rolfe, division chief with Brampton Fire.

“We’re in really good shape. The [heavy] smoke has dissipated,” he said. “There’s steam and some light smoke coming out of the pile, really staying within the facility.”

At the peak of the incident, fourteen fire trucks were dispatched and will gradually leave the area throughout Wednesday as crews continue their efforts, stated Sevdia Rama, public relations advisor for the City of Brampton on Wednesday.

She mentioned that the cause of the fire is still being investigated.

Peel Regional Police reported they were contacted by Brampton Fire around 4:20 p. m. to assist with traffic management in the vicinity. Const. Tyler Bell-Morena, spokesperson for Peel police, indicated that it appeared recycling material piles were burning.

He noted that heavy smoke initially hindered visibility in the area; however, by 8:30 p. m., winds had lifted much of the large plume away from ground level improving visibility.

The wind did push some smoke into nearby residential areas in Mississauga too, he added. Residents and drivers were advised to keep their windows closed during this time.

“Residents may hear periodic booms in the area. That could just be from buildup of pockets of air within these piles. The fire department is not concerned about it so we shouldn’t be,” he said.

Constable Laurie Mc Cann stated she believed there was no longer a warning as of Wednesday morning since firefighters have contained it now. She confirmed that no injuries resulted from this incident.

The police encouraged drivers to seek alternative routes and avoid passing through affected areas as spectators were contributing to traffic delays nearby.

Intermodal Drive was closed west of Goreway Drive while crews continued their work to extinguish flames.
