MARKHAM, Ontario – The Government of Ontario is making a major investment in the future of open-wheel racing in the province, committing $1.5 million to back the first-ever Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham, set for Aug. 14-16.
This funding will help kick off a new chapter for one of Canada’s most well-known motorsports events as it moves to a temporary 3.52-kilometre street circuit in Downtown Markham. Organizers anticipate that the three-day festival weekend will draw over 160,000 attendees and generate tens of millions of dollars in economic activity across tourism, hospitality, and event sectors.
The event is expected to become York Region’s largest sports and cultural celebration ever, giving a significant boost to local businesses while putting Markham and its surroundings on the global map.
“Our government is proud to support the 2026 Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham,” said Natalie Pierre, Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Sport. “This race weekend will attract visitors, create economic opportunities for local businesses and showcase the best of York Region and our province.”
The race has its roots dating back to 1986 and starts a new journey with its relocation to Markham after being one of North America’s top open-wheel racing events for decades. Organizers believe that provincial support will help provide a world-class experience while enhancing Ontario’s image as a destination for major sporting occasions.
Alongside the thrilling races, the weekend will continue community initiatives like Your Ontario Honda Dealers Present Free Fan Friday, which has raised over $1.1 million for Make-A-Wish Canada since 2010.
“Bringing the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy to Markham represents an exciting new chapter for our event,” said event president Jeff Atkinson. “This support not only allows us to deliver a world-class motorsport experience for fans but also drives significant tourism, supports local businesses and showcases Markham on a global stage.”
