A fire broke out in a ninth-floor apartment in London, Ont., causing around $75,000 in damage on Wednesday night. Fire officials have indicated that unattended cooking was to blame.
Crews from the London Fire Department responded to the 500 block of Mornington Avenue, just east of Morning Park, after getting reports of smoke coming from the building.
Upon arrival, firefighters found that the fire had begun in a unit on the ninth floor.
“They were able to quickly advance a line and extinguish a fire that was on the stove top with extension into the countertops and cabinet area, and knock the fire down,” said platoon chief Jamie Britton.
A search of the apartment revealed no occupants inside, and teams used ventilation methods to remove smoke from both the unit and nearby areas.
“There was smoke throughout the fire unit and the hallway, which we used mechanical ventilation to clear both the apartment and the hallways,” he said.
The estimated damage amounts to about $75,000, primarily due to kitchen damage and smoke throughout the unit.
Britton mentioned that cooking remains a leading cause of residential fires and encouraged residents to stay vigilant.
“Please do not leave unattended cooking on the stovetop or combustibles near the stovetop,” he said. “The amount of fires that we’re getting through cooking and unattended, if we can stop that, then it’d be a lot safer for Londoners in general.”
