The Republican president issued an executive order instructing the Interior Department to revise the lake’s name in the US geographic naming service.
However, Mr. Trump can’t compel Canada to adopt his preferred name.

Recently, he has been promoting the idea of this name change as the US announced it would impose 50% tariffs on 20 billion dollars worth of Canadian goods over the weekend after negotiations between both nations fell apart.
The president has been poking at America’s northern neighbor since returning to the White House last year, implying that Canada, once a warm ally, should become part of the United States as its 51st state.
This week, Canada retaliated against Mr. Trump’s import taxes by placing tariffs on 20 billion dollars worth of American products, including steel, dairy items, appliances, and farming equipment.
Mr. Trump signed the order while sitting at the Resolute Desk in his Oval Office, with a large sign behind him featuring a map of the Great Lakes.
Over Lake Ontario, bold red letters read “Lake America”.
Next to him was another map stating “Making The Great Lakes Even Greater.”

This lake is one among several Great Lakes that border both countries.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney dismissed this action by referring to the lake’s indigenous roots and highlighting that its name predates both Canadian Confederation and the US Declaration of Independence.
“Canadians also know that naming reality means calling it Lake Ontario – then, now and always,” he wrote.
Nova Scotia premier Tim Houston mocked Mr. Trump’s decision on social media saying: “We’re into some real foolishness now. It’s Lake Ontario, buddy.”
No single international organization determines names for shared bodies of water and Mr. Trump has significant authority regarding how places are recognized by the US government.
Ontario premier Doug Ford, who has exchanged barbs with Mr. Trump in recent times, labeled this potential name change as “a lot of rhetoric”.
The term Lake Ontario originates from a word used by Huron Indigenous peoples: “oniatari: io,” meaning “lake of shining waters”.
The province of Ontario was established in 1867 and took its name from this lake.

Mr. Trump remarked that while his actions weren’t meant to convey any specific geopolitical message, “Canada’s been ripping us off for a long time” concerning trade and military matters.
“They wanted to be treated like a state and they’re not a state,” said the president.
“We just can’t do that anymore.”
“We love the people of Canada,” Mr. Trump continued.
“I don’t think their representatives do an appropriate job. Maybe they’ll change; I really don’t know. It doesn’t make much difference.”
This initiative resembles his previous attempt last year to rename Gulf of Mexico as “Gulf of America.”
Mr. Trump wrote his name with a Sharpie on this executive order then raised it for photographers stating: “And we filed all necessary papers; documents; everything else.”
“We’ve notified all relevant parties we needed to notify. So we’ve done everything you have to do,” he noted.

“And this is official; effective immediately.”
The executive order signed by Mr. Trump indicates these changes are expected within 30 days.
He also hinted that his campaign for renaming waterways might not yet be over.
“So if you think about it we have a gulf and we have a lake; now all we need is an ocean,” remarked Mr. Trump.
