Seven women were hurt and taken to the hospital on Friday when a vehicle drove through a brick wall and into a fitness center in London, Ont.

The crash happened around 7:40 a. m. at Sherwood Forest Mall, near Wonderland and Gainsborough roads, according to London police.

Authorities reported that a car collided with the back of a Good Life Fitness facility. Seven individuals, including the driver – all women – were hospitalized after emergency measures were applied at the scene.

“At this time, two people remain in critical condition, including one person who was trapped beneath the vehicle and has since been freed,” Chief Thai Truong told reporters on Friday afternoon.

Truong later confirmed that one of those two critical patients was considered to be in serious condition.

Truong mentioned that the driver has been arrested and charges are likely forthcoming.

“We have evidence showing that the vehicle accelerated into the building,” he added.

The fitness center is closed until further notice, said Tracy Matthews, senior vice-president of experience and safety at Good Life Fitness.

“Our top priority is ensuring the well-being of our members and associates, and we’re thinking of everyone affected,” she stated. “We appreciate the quick response from emergency services.”

The Mayor of London, Josh Morgan, noted that the investigation required a “massive, coordinated effort” which was “executed professionally.”

“Our sympathies go out not only to the families involved but also to other witnesses or those nearby during this event. We’re also thinking about regular visitors to the mall and local businesses,” he said.

After the crash occurred, London Health Sciences Centre activated a Level 1 Code Orange due to an external emergency that could lead to an influx of patients.

A representative from the hospital confirmed that the Code Orange has been resolved but warned that longer wait times may occur in their emergency department.

The hospital also verified it is treating seven patients injured during this incident.

If anyone has information regarding this situation they are asked to contact police.
