The Ontario government has come to an agreement with CN to buy land for the upcoming construction of dedicated passenger-rail tracks along the current Metrolinx GO Transit Kitchener Line. This deal is another move in Ontario’s initiative to create fast, two-way and all-day GO Transit service between Kitchener and Toronto, according to a press release from government officials. The Kitchener extension project will add roughly 25 miles of new dedicated two-way tracks for GO Transit, along with signal improvements, bridge renovations, and expanded platforms throughout the existing corridor. Currently, GO Transit operates on CN tracks leading to Kitchener. Once the dedicated tracks are established along the Kitchener Line, GO Transit will provide two-way service all day long, seven days a week between Union Station in Toronto and Bramalea, Mount Pleasant, and Kitchener. In the meantime, Metrolinx has secured agreements with CN to enhance passenger service on the existing Kitchener Line starting Nov. 23.
