This year has been quite eventful in the Waterloo region, with CBC Kitchener-Waterloo reporters bringing to light stories that have made an impact on the community.
Among these is the ongoing legal dispute regarding a regional lot that turned into an encampment at the intersection of Weber Street and Victoria Street in Kitchener.
The region introduced a new bylaw for this site, which required residents to vacate the encampment by December 1 to allow Metrolinx to use it early next year for track work necessary for the new transit hub. However, this case is still pending before a judge in Kitchener, with another court date set for February.
The community has shown significant interest in the missing person case of Eli Wood. The 25-year-old was living in a unit behind a house in Kitchener and hasn’t been seen since his home was engulfed by fire on October 19.
According to investigators from the Waterloo Regional Police Service (WRPS), the fire was ruled arson, suggesting it was targeted and implying foul play could be involved in Wood’s disappearance. Authorities continue their investigation and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
CBC K-W’s Joe Pavia reported back in November about a mysterious individual who places a flag on a Kitchener home’s lawn each Remembrance Day. He managed to identify this man and connect him with the homeowner.
This year also featured significant weather events, including severe snowstorms in February and November along with intense heat during summer months.

Mystery man places flag and salutes Kitchener home on Remembrance Day
A family from Kitchener is trying to understand who has been placing a flag on their lawn each Remembrance Day. The owner of their Second World War-era house captured footage of this year’s moment on their security camera, showing someone dressed as a soldier using a cane to place the flag before saluting.
In March, Geovanny Villalba-Aleman, a former University of Waterloo student who pleaded guilty after attacking classmates during a gender-studies class back in 2023, received an 11-year prison sentence. While he wasn’t charged with terrorism, the judge described his actions as “a particularly grave hate crime.”
This year also held two elections. A snap provincial election took place in February but resulted in little change locally; all Members of Provincial Parliament retained their positions.
The most notable local shift happened in Wellington-Halton Hills where Progressive Conservative candidate Joseph Racinsky emerged victorious. This race was significant because Racinsky replaced Ted Arnott as MPP for that area after Arnott decided against running again following 34 years in office.
The federal election held in May brought more change locally as Conservative candidates won multiple seats including MP Matt Strauss defeating Liberal incumbent Valerie Bradford in Kitchener South-Hespeler, MP Connie Cody beating Liberal Bryan May in Cambridge, and MP Kelly De Ridder ousting Green incumbent Mike Morrice from Kitchener Centre.
Liberal MPs Bardish Chagger (Waterloo) and Tim Louis (Kitchener-Conestoga) both kept their seats while Dominique O’Rourke retained Guelph’s seat for Liberals after former MP Lloyd Longfield chose not to seek re-election.

1. ‘I’m hoping for a miracle’: Breslau neighbours face $14K per household bill for decade-old sewer project
Breslau residents were taken aback when they received notices this November informing them they owe nearly $14,000 each for water and sewer work carried out on their street ten years ago.
Twenty-five homes located along Scheifele Place, Woolwich Street South, Dolman Street and Joseph Street received letters dated October 27 from Woolwich Township requesting payment of $13,950.19 each towards covering costs totaling $348,754.75.
After expressing concerns at township council meetings, residents were granted extra time to pay off these bills without interest if they agree to enter into a payment plan over twenty years.
2. Justin and Hailey Bieber draw attention while exploring businesses around Cambridge
The city of Cambridge enjoyed some star power when pop icons Justin Bieber and his wife Hailey visited local shops back in September while sharing moments online through social media posts.
