Malcolm Neil Dykens, 63, of Four Mile Brook, NS passed away at his home on Wednesday March 4, 2026, from complications from Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and heart disease. His loss is felt deeply by all who knew and loved him.
Neil was born on May 16, 1962, in Toronto, Ontario before settling down with his family in New Glasgow at a young age. He worked at Maritime Steel & Foundries Ltd for over 30 years until it closed its doors.
Neil is survived by his devoted life partner of more than 40 years, Marilyn Hopkins and their son Michael (Annie), Moncton. He also leaves behind two grandchildren, Zachary and Jasmine, who brought him so much happiness. He is additionally survived by his loving sisters, Thelma (Donnie), Riverton; Dawn (Kevin), Pictou Landing; Darlene (Gary), Westville; Stacey (John), PEI; his eldest nephew Jason (Alicia), Riverton; nieces and nephews Tracy and Marlo; Steffanie and Shawn; Kenzie; Brooklyn and Amy; Justin; Makenna and Jordan; along with great-nieces and great-nephews Kameryn and Ethan; Jackson and Dylan; Christopher; Calvin, Hunter, Madelyn; Finley. Mother-in-law Ruth and father-in-law Wayne also survive him as well as brother-in-law Rob (Linda).
Neil was predeceased by his father Malcolm (Dyke) and mother Frances (Tubby), along with brothers Billy and Kenny.
Over the years, Neil found comfort in the company of many beloved pets. His dog Mila was his constant companion while his cat Molly adored him just as much. He also leaves behind numerous friends and extended family members who will miss spending time with him greatly.
Neil enjoyed a life filled with simple pleasures. He loved watching his favorite daytime soaps, playing bingo each week, but most of all he cherished board games with his grandkids during their visits – especially when he won! One of his happiest moments was the yearly trip to Jamaica that he took with Marilyn alongside close friends – a place filled with wonderful memories. Just days before he passed away they returned from their 11th trip to Jamaica together. There were countless memorable trips throughout the years including camping trips with family and friends, travels to Florida, Nashville, Dominican Republic twice to Cuba as well as multiple trips to New Hampshire and Newfoundland. There were also several cross-country drives such as one in 2015 when Michael joined him from Alberta in an overly packed car which led to an unexpected stopover in Northern Ontario for a car replacement. His absence will be strongly felt during the family’s annual Christmas gathering. Neil will be remembered for his humor, playful smile, and generous nature.
In accordance with Neil’s wishes there will be no viewing or funeral service held. A celebration of life will take place later on. Cremation has occurred already. Any donations made in Neil’s memory can go to Nova Scotia or your local SPCA.
